Keeping a Training Log

A written training log is a simple, but very valuable tool for monitoring your progress and reaching your goals. How can you beat your last workout, if you don't know what it was? Recording your workouts helps you to improve from week to week. Don't rely on your memory to reference what you did the last time; dedicate a notebook as your training log.

This is especially valuable for strength training/bodybuilding. Always take your log with you to the gym. Take notes after each exercise. For each work out, note the:
  • Day/date
  • Specific workout (legs, biceps/back, etc)
  • Exercises/machines that you used (Cybex cable pull down, dumbbell curls, etc.)
  • Weight and # of reps to muscle failure
  • # of sets per exercise. There is no need to record warm up sets, only working sets.
  • Note how you felt that day (great, strong, tired, etc.)
